The Wells Group was established by myself, Jim Wotkyns, and my partner, John Wells, in 1985. We were located at the corner of 9th Street and Main Avenue in downtown Durango for 33 years until November 2018 when we moved just 2 blocks north to 1130 Main Avenue to the beautifully restored historic building that once housed the Herald Democrat Newspaper in the late 1800’s.
Over the years we’ve expanded by adding offices in Bayfield (1994), the Mountain Resort area (2009), Tamarron Lodge (2010), and Glacier Club (2017).
“We Know SW Colorado” best describes our local knowledge of the area and ensures we best meet the needs of our clients’ for residential, commercial, resort, farm and ranch and land. Our firm consistently has over one-third of the market share in our area and our Brokers collectively sell more properties than any other brokerage in southwest Colorado. As an Owner, who is very involved in our company’s day-to-day operations, I use my vast experience of our market to actively sell real estate. I know the market well and provide excellent service to buyers and sellers alike.
After all these years, The Wells Group remains the largest independent locally owned, real estate brokerage in the area with over 50 full-time licensed brokers, 12 broker assistants, and a professional staff of 7. Our affiliation with Leading Real Estate Companies of the World gives our local brokerage global reach with the top professionals. My firm contributes generously to a variety of local causes. In 2018 alone, we donated over $50,000 ! We take pride in encouraging our Brokers to be involved in community, charitable, and civic activities as an investment in our community.
After graduating from Colorado State University in 1980, I married my high school sweetheart from Denver and quickly planted roots in Durango to enjoy the lifestyle. I had a stint in the oil and gas business, which has served my real estate career well when dealing with property mineral rights. My wife, Daryl, and I raised our two children here with agriculture and ranching being a big part of our family life, along with training my Border Collie dogs for sheep and cattle competitions. We are active in the family ranch operation and produce hay for our livestock. My knowledge of agriculture and water rights has been invaluable in helping my clients. I am also a commercial and residential landlord, and frequently field questions for clients about those types of investments.
As a commitment to our community, I volunteer for La Plata County Search and Rescue to be on-call 24/7 to use my knowledge of the high country and horses assisting with rescue missions. In 2016, I completed 15 years of volunteering as a POST certified peace officer serving the Durango Police Department as a reserve officer.
As a father, I’m proud to say that our daughter, Emily, and our son, Kelly, are spreading their wings. Emily graduated from the University of Wyoming with two undergraduate degrees and is currently working with a large cattle & ranch operation in Central Wyoming. The summer of 2016 she married and we welcomed a new son-in-law into our family. Kelly completed his undergraduate and Masters degrees in mechanical engineering at University of Wyoming in 2016 and he is employed in his field on the Front Range of Colorado. The summer of 2018 Kelly married and we now have a wonderful daughter-in-law as well.

As my full-time Licensed Assistant, Kelli Stanley, works with Buyers and Sellers through a smooth real estate transaction. She started with me at The Wells Group in 2008. The following year we honored her with our company’s Spirit Award at our annual banquet. She believes that if you do good things for good people the rewards will follow and has been an essential asset to my team. She stays current on issues in our industry through continuing education courses and is the computer “techie” on our team.
In 2000, Kelli hand-picked Durango as the mountain community where she wanted to live, play and raise a family after living in various areas of Colorado since 1990. She has a son attending Durango High School, who plays football and baseball. She enjoys exploring the region by snow skiing, hiking, camping, paddle boarding and participating in various family activities around town. Her “pound puppy”, an American Dingo named Marty, loves the dog-friendly town of Durango.
She is enthusiastic about promoting Durango as an ideal community for an active lifestyle with quick access to the mountains and desert. She knows our area well having worked at the Durango Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Office.
Prior to entering the real estate field, she worked for the American Cancer Society as their Quality of Life Manager to assist patients and their families with treatment related tasks. Once licensed as a real estate broker she knew there was only one firm in Durango where she wanted to work, The Wells Group. Our firm’s reputation, community involvement and leader in the marketplace SOLD her. She was also a client of The Wells Group when she bought and sold her homes…something she would definitely recommend to you.
